A virtual private network (VPN) is a separate computer network which operates on top of an existing network, providing it with a secure level of privacy. This is often done by companies in order to give employees remote access to a secure network without risk of being exposed through its connection to the World Wide Web.

This effect is achieved by forming links between the nodes of the managed VPN over the virtual circuits and logical connections of the larger network. From here, the VPN allows access using private routing mechanisms, often customised to enhance security.

A managed VPN also allows colleagues within the same company to work together despite being in different locations around the world. This is done in a similar fashion to network sharing, although in this instance the network is carried by the public telecommunication infrastructure of the internet.

In addition, it is possible to set up mobile managed VPNs, which would allow people to access shared documents while on-the-move using mobile telecommunications hardware.

Users are also protected by the managed VPN while online as the network protects the data sent and received while logged in. This is done by encrypting the information before it is sent and filtering it through a tunnel which will only accommodate properly encrypted data. In addition, the managed VPN also protects those using it by encrypting their network address.

Essentially, the purpose of a managed VPN is to provide remote workers with the same facilities that they would have working in an office, but at a fraction of the cost and with a high level of security.
